Reading for Pleasure @ Lyndhurst

We have been working hard to encourage children to want to read for pleasure. Here are some examples of our current enrichment activities for reading. We've been working on giving more opportunities for children to read and engage with reading by improving, updating and diversifying our current reading collections.

Rotary Club Free Books:

Dukinfield's Rotary Club came to school with FREE books donations for every child from EYFS - Y6. Each child went home with at least one book they have personally chosen.

Book Donations from Ryder & Dutton:

Ryder & Dutton kindly gifted school some money for which we used to buy more new books for the library. Reading champions and teachers came together to create a list of desirable books and authors in order to diversify our current collection. Reading Champions were excited to receive these books on behalf on our school. They have been tasked with reading some of the books first so that they can review them for others.

Author Zoom with Elle McNicoll:

Year 3 and Year 4 were invited to take part in a zoom meeting with author Elle McNicoll. Here she introduced her new book: Like a Charm, and the children were lucky enough to all receive a free copy. Elle McNicoll is an example of the children being exposed to new emerging authors and learning that issue such a dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism do not have to hold you back from pursuing your dream of being an author.

Christmas Book Fair:

Mrs Duckworth organised a FREE book fayre using local donations. It was held during our Christmas Fayre and was a lovely opportunity for children to receive a book which they could enjoy for Christmas or even to give as a present to a sibling or family member. We were also able to restock a good chunk of our library too!

Author Zoom Katherine Rundell:

Year 5 and 6 engaged with a zoom where Katherine Rundell talked about her experience in becoming a famous children's author, what inspires her, how she creates some of her stories and also introduced her newest publication "impossible creatures". This has now been added to our school library.

Book Vending Machine:

To help create a positive reading culture in our school, we will be rewarding children who actively engage with reading by entering them into a half termly draw. The winner will be awarded a token to get a book of their choice from the vending machine below.

The vending machine was stocked using suggestions from the children and staff.

2 children are chosen each half term from each class in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 who each receive a certificate and a gold coin to use in the book vending machine. In order to qualify for the draw, children must show they are engaging in reading, This might be from reading at home, sharing books they love with their teachers and peers and also joining in with class discussions.

We cant wait to get started. There is already a buzz about reading since it arrived!
