Intent
At Lyndhurst Community Primary School, we recognise our school context and have designed our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum with the intent that pupils build secure understanding of a variety of relationships and friendships they will encounter in their lives.
The school vision ‘Support, Challenge, Inspire’ is interwoven within our RSE curriculum intent and design. Our curriculum is designed with three goals in mind:
Support
In RSE we encourage children to understand that RSE is all about understanding and navigating the different relationships that they will encounter in their lives, from family relationships to friendships. We support children to understand what is acceptable to them and support them in finding ways to express their feelings, and that it is important to discuss these with a trusted adult. We encourage children to ask questions in a safe and supportive environment.
Challenge
In RSE we challenge our children to understand the wide variety of relationships that happen around them. We provide children with opportunities to challenge their thinking and deepen their understanding of a variety of situations. Through careful scaffolding children are given the tools to challenge behaviours outside of the classroom and have opportunities to practise these in class in role play scenarios.
Inspire
In RSE we want to inspire students to understand their role in the world around them and become confident adults who understand who they are. We inspire children to be proud of who they are and how their behaviour and choices can impact others around them.
RSE Curriculum Aims
In RSE we aim to provide children with a curriculum, which is designed to give the children the skills they need to navigate the range of relationships in our modern society. Our RSE scheme is from the Tough Cookies scheme that has been endorsed and provided by Tameside Council, developed alongside teachers and safeguarding specialists.
Our curriculum sets out:
- Clear end of year goals so that every teacher is aware of how what they teach feeds into the next year groups.
- The key concepts that will be taught in each year group. These are the key concepts that are taught in each area which are then built on in each year group to create a clear curriculum.
Sustained Mastery
To provide sustained mastery, children are given the opportunity to practise their skills they have learnt in the classroom in a variety of situations both created by adults and that occur naturally on the playground.
